My dear friend Eugene Ethelbert Miller is an award-winning African-American poet, teacher and literary activist, based in Washington, DC. He is the author of several collections of poetry and two memoirs, the editor of Poet Lore magazine, and the host of the weekly WPFW morning radio show On the Margin.

I’ll never forget the day that he sent me the quote above, because in just a few words, it encapsulates the reason why I love cooking and baking so much. In honor of African American Heritage Month, American Heart Month, Creative Romance Month, and National Bake For Family Fun Month, I urge you to indulge in the sweet words of poetry while enjoying some time in the kitchen and with loved ones, hopefully preparing some of the recipes I’ve shared below.
