I’ll be honest, when I was first asked to co-write Managing Cholesterol For Dummies with Dr. Simon Poole, I had my reservations. I was concerned that there wouldn’t be anything new to add to the information that was already published on the topic, and even more worried that I wouldn’t be able to create mouthwatering recipes that would help people manage their cholesterol while indulging in the pleasures of the palate at the same time.

One thing that I did realize, however, was a great need to help people better manage cholesterol. According to the World Health Organization’s latest statistics, “the global prevalence of raised total cholesterol among adults was 39% (37% for males and 40% for females).”  In the U.S., according to Cleveland Clinic, 1 in 3 adults have high cholesterol. For more than half of the adults with high cholesterol, treatment isn't helping enough, or else they're not using any treatment. Both Dr. Poole and I realized quickly that there is need for a book which completely demystifies cholesterol and clearly offers effective solutions for prevention, management, and lowering it which have changed in recent years.

For this reason, we decided to write Managing Cholesterol For Dummies. This new, holistic, and integrative way in which experts are now looking at cholesterol and its management offers real hope for people not only to lower their cholesterol numbers, but to avoid the complications that are associated with having high cholesterol in the first place.

Managing Cholesterol For Dummies offers a revolutionary new concept which describes the real danger of cholesterol and challenges the over-simplistic existing theories. Current evidence that "Oxidized LDL cholesterol" which results in inflammation, is the most important factor leading to heart disease and stroke and is what people need to become familiar with to improve their health.

From a culinary perspective, I combined both fiber rich ingredients known to lower cholesterol with high phenolic foods that reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the most mouthwatering ways. My mission was to create recipes that anyone would consider delicious indulgences regardless of their health goals. Offering the added health boosting benefits of each recipe makes them even more worth celebrating.
